Browsing Ebay, I stumbled upon this thing, an all seasons sled from 1927, apparently people back then bombed hills with this skateboard contraption.

I always assumed that skateboarding began in the 50's anyway, checkout the auction and pictures here. rubber coated wheels, independent steering and rails! click on the pic to see the item.
